Storms, Temps In 90s Could Hit As Air Quality Alert Issued In Illinois

ILLINOIS — Temperatures will be in the 90s all week, with a chance of storms Wednesday through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Tuesday will be sunny and dry, with a high of 90 degrees. Isolated storms are possible on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the weather service said.

The chance of storms comes after a long stretch of dry weather that officials said could lead to a "flash drought" for Illinois.

Wednesday has a high of 89, Thursday a high of 90 and Friday a high of 92. Temperatures will be in the 70s to low 80s near Lake Michigan.

Due to the rising temperatures, an air quality alert has been issued for Tuesday. The weather service said the sunshine and hot temperatures will "generate higher levels of surface ozone" on Tuesday. Prolonged outdoor activity should be limited, especially for those with chronic respiratory illness.

AccuWeather also said the risk of tree pollen is high on Tuesday. "Keep windows closed and change clothing after returning to the indoors," the private forecaster advised.

According to AccuWeather, the hottest day this week for the Joliet area will be Thursday, which will be 90 degrees. Temps will be near the record high of 92, which was set in 1988.
