CHICAGO — Hundreds of flights were canceled over the weekend in Chicago as the area faced an overnight forecast of rain, snow and potentially dangerous wind to start the week.
As of 4:25 p.m. Sunday, 793 flights had been canceled at O’Hare International Airport within 24 hours and 107 flights had been canceled at Chicago Midway International Airport over the same timespan, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.
O’Hare was also under a ground delay on Sunday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, with departures to the airport within the contiguous U.S. delayed an average of 216 minutes due to thunderstorms.
“A cold front will transition rain over to snow tonight into Monday,” the NWS Chicago X account posted Sunday afternoon. “The accumulating snow in addition to gusty northwest winds will result in blowing snow which will make travel hazardous due to very low visibilities and snow covered roads.”
The area is under a wind advisory until 9 p.m. with gusts up to 45 mph in the forecast, according to the National Weather Service.
Afternoon rain is expected to mix with sleet overnight and eventually turn to snow, according to the weather service. Monday is forecast to bring more snow and gusts as high as 45 mph.
