Students From District 99 Place In Statewide Stock Market Game

The Downers Grove North and South students earned first and third place respectively in the competition.

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — It's been a stellar month for students in Community High School District 99 as they take part in statewide competitions in a number of disciplines. Most recently, students from both Downers Grove North and Downers Grove South High School won first and third place respectively in the Stock Market Game's Illinois Northwest Suburban Spring 2023 edition.

A total of 500 teams took part in the competition, which required participants to use $100,000 in hypothetical capital to trade, buy and sell imaginary stocks.

Earning first place was Tyler Schumacher, Jake Solecki, William Murphy and Everett McDonald of Downers North, who competed under the guidance of DGN teacher Tom Saam. Third place honors went to Downers Grove South's Jake Justus and Robert Vong, with teacher Elaine Marinakos at the helm.

“We teach lessons on the stock market as an investment strategy and our students apply their learning to research stock and make the best transactions possible,” Marinakos said in a statement. “This was especially challenging this semester as the stock market was facing a down-turn and the students needed to adjust their strategy.”

Recently, four District 99 students also earned nods at theFamily Career and Community Leaders Competition.
