Elgin Community College Student Maria Niño Named IACEA Adult Learner of the Year
ECC student Maria Niño of Carpentersville has been named the 2026 Paul Simon Adult Learner of the Year. She is expected to graduate in May.
Elgin Community College (ECC) student Maria Niño of Carpentersville has been named the 2026 Paul Simon Adult Learner of the Year by the Illinois Adult and Continuing Education Association (IACEA), a statewide honor recognizing outstanding achievement in adult education.
Niño’s journey reflects perseverance and determination. After leaving high school without a diploma, she returned to the classroom through ECC’s GED preparation program, motivated by a desire to model perseverance and a love of learning for her children.
“From the beginning, her determination was unmistakable,” said Marcia Luptak, associate dean of adult education at ECC. “Her trajectory reflects the tangible, life-changing impact of adult education.”

While balancing school and family responsibilities as a mother of three, Niño developed detailed plans to ensure she could attend classes consistently. Her persistence led to earning her Illinois High School Diploma in spring 2023, a milestone she described as fulfilling a promise to herself and her family.
Following that achievement, Niño continued her educational journey at ECC. Through participation in the Early Childhood Bridge program and volunteer work as a teacher’s aide, she discovered a passion for teaching. She is now pursuing an associate degree in early childhood education and is expected to graduate in May.

“In my class, I knew that she had found her calling. Her work was excellent, and she had the skills and creativity to effectively work with young children,” said Colleen Stribling, professor of ESL at ECC.
In addition to her coursework, Niño pursued undergraduate research through ECC’s Center for Undergraduate Research, Innovation, and Creativity (CURIC). Her project explored the experiences of mothers returning to school, including the challenges they face and the strategies they use to succeed. She presented her findings at a campus symposium.
Niño has also demonstrated leadership beyond the classroom. She was inducted into the National Adult Education Honor Society (NAEHS) and later served as president of ECC’s chapter. In that role, she helped lead recruitment efforts, organized events, and worked to connect adult education students with additional college resources.
Her nomination highlights not only her academic success, but also her role as a leader and advocate for other adult learners.
The Paul Simon Adult Learner of the Year Award recognizes students across Illinois who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and perseverance in overcoming barriers to education.
