Elgin Community College Theatre Presents Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451

Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 ignites the Elgin Community College (ECC) Arts Center’s SecondStage this spring, in ECC Theatre’s adaptation of the iconic 1953 novel, running Friday, April 24 to Sunday, May 3, 2026. ECC's Art Center is located in Building H at 1700 Spartan Drive.

Set in a chilling future where books are banned and “firemen” burn any that remain to suppress knowledge and independent thought, the story follows Guy Montag, a fireman who becomes disillusioned with his destructive role and questions the superficial, technology-fueled society. As censorship tightens its grip, Montag risks everything to reclaim knowledge, memory, and the freedom to think for himself.

“We’ve never staged science fiction at ECC, and I was drawn to the challenge of bringing this genre to life on our stage,” said Susan A. Robinson, director of Fahrenheit 451 and associate professor of theatre at ECC. “I also recognize that what was a cautionary tale in the 1950s is now much closer to the reality of our everyday lives.”

While the cast initially approached the material cautiously, the process ultimately evolved into a rewarding and thought-provoking experience.

“The play is rich with big ideas, philosophical arguments, and literary references that may not be familiar to everyone,” Robinson added. “Together, we explored the mechanics of it, but also the questions it asks: Who do we want to be? How much freedom do we really want to have? What are we willing to do for that freedom, the freedom to think for ourselves?

Robinson promises a visually dynamic and powerful production.

“We have a fantastic design team, and they have been having a lot of fun with mechanical beasts, flamethrowers, a fireman’s pole, and how to create the needs of the play with lights, sound, and projections,” she said.

With twists, urgency, and haunting relevance, Fahrenheit 451 offers audiences a thrilling journey through a dystopian future that feels all too possible.

“I hope the audience leaves questioning the status quo,” Robinson concluded. “And I hope they recognize that through community, meaningful change is within reach. We may not be able to change the present, but we can certainly plan and work towards a better future.”

Showtimes are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, and on Sundays at 3 pm.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and free for ECC students. All tickets are General Admission and available at eccartscenter.org or by calling the box office at 847-622-0300.
