Elgin Interim Police Chief Accepts Schaumburg Top Cop Job

Bill Wolf, a 26-year veteran of the Elgin Police Department, will start his new job in Schaumburg on Aug. 14.

ELGIN, IL — Interim Elgin Police Chief Bill Wolf has accepted a new job as the deputy chief for the Schaumburg Police Department and will start on Aug. 14, Schaumburg Chief James Larkin announced Monday. Wolf, a 26-year veteran of the Elgin Police Department, has climbed the ranks at the department, starting as a patrol officer before being promoted to a lieutenant in 2006, a commander in 2012 and deputy chief in 2013, according to media reports. City Manager Rick Kozal chose Wolf to serve as interim police chief after Elgin Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda announced he would be taking a new job as the top cop in Fort Collins, Colorado, the Elgin Courier-News reports.

According to the Schaumburg job posting, the new deputy chief would be given strong consideration to take on the role of police chief once Schaumburg's current chief, Jim Lamkin, retires. The new hire, according to the posting, would get to learn Lamkin's job while he is still with the department while "contemplating the possibility of transitioning into the top leadership role..."

Wolf first told city officials he had accepted the new job in Schaumburg in early June, and was just awaiting the completion of background checks and other pre-employment work, the Elgin Courier-News reports. Shortly before that announcement, Kozal tapped Wolf to take on the role as interim police chief.
