A friend's quick CPR helped save the boy, who faces surgeries and months of recovery before he can return home, and the family has launched a GoFundMe to handle mounting medical costs.

Prosecutors said the killing was a planned robbery, while the defendant claimed self-defense, but jurors also found he personally fired the gun, triggering a lengthy sentence enhancement.
