U46: High Lead Levels Found At Several Elementary Schools, Preschools
Under state law, school districts with buildings built before 1987 and that house preschool through fifth grade students must test for lead.

ELGIN, IL - School District U46 will replace more than 250 drinking fountains, sinks and water coolers after recent testing required by the state showed high lead levels in the drinking water, according to the Elgin Courier-News. The school district tested water sources in 38 of its buildings that house grades between preschool and fifth grade and were built before Jan. 1, 1987, which is the state requirement.
State law requires the water sources show lead levels below 5 parts per billion. The highest lead levels found following the testing was at a first-floor sink at Clinton Elementary School in South Elgin where a 3,120-parts-per-billion sample was recorded, which is 624 times higher than the state requirement, according to the Elgin Courier-News.
Meanwhile, schools with the most failing water sources included Wayne Elementary School in Wayne, Bartlett Elementary School in Bartlett, Willard Elementary School in South Elgin and Ridge Circle Elementary School in Streamwood.
