ELMHURST, IL – Superior Ambulance is asking Elmhurst for permission to set up an ambulance station on the north side.

The station would be at 699 Walnut St., which is in an industrial area. It would be a couple of blocks from Superior's headquarters at 395 W. Lake St.

The Walnut Street building is the old site of the Team Elmhurst Soccer Club.

Superior said it chose the building because it has a big garage that can house its 17 ambulances. It plans no major changes to the building.

Last week, Kim Godden, a Superior vice president, told the city's Zoning and Planning Commission that the station would enhance the area.

David Hill, Superior's CEO, said the paramedics and emergency medical technicians are at the headquarters now.

"They feel a little alienated in those headquarters," he said. "They feel like corporate, and so we set this up in other towns, and it becomes like a clubhouse. They go there, and they develop friendships... You can't have a club without a clubhouse."

The commission unanimously recommended a conditional use permit for the station.

On Monday, the City Council's Development, Planning and Zoning Commission also gave its go-ahead. The permit next goes before the full council.
