See Video: Elmhurst E-Motorbiker Crashes Into Car

ELMHURST, IL – A 10-year-old electric motorcycle rider collided with a car over the weekend in Elmhurst, with his parent later cited, police said.

Police said the bike is not street legal in Illinois.

The crash was shortly before noon Saturday northeast of St. Charles Road and Villa Avenue, which is just inside the city limit.

On an electric motorcycle, the boy was riding west on the sidewalk along St. Charles, then north on Villa, police said.

The driver of a Nissan sedan slowed to make a right turn from Vila into the parking lot of the local Elks lodge.

As the driver turned, the 10-year-old struck the car and fell to the ground, police said.

Reviewing the video, police said they saw the helmet-wearing boy speeding along the sidewalk.

Paramedics evaluated the boy, who suffered minor injuries, police said. His parent took him to an area hospital.

The parent was cited under the city's ordinance for parental responsibility because the child operated a wheeled motor vehicle on a public sidewalk.

Elmhurst police warned parents that state law and local ordinances prohibit the operation of electric bicycles and motorized electric and gas motorcycles on public sidewalks.

They also said all motorized mini bikes, dirt bikes and ATVs are barred on public streets.

Elmhurst and other towns are grappling with how to deal with the recent onslaught of such vehicles.
