The Elmhurst City Council, following a recommendation from the Development, Planning and Zoning Committee, recently approved Smith's request for larger wall signs on the mall.

City code allows for up to sixteen individual 25-square-foot wall signs, with overall maximum signage of 465 square feet. The developer requested seven wall signs ranging in size from 33 square feet to 110 square feet for a total of just under 460 square feet of signage.

In recommending approval of the the variation request, the DPZ Committee noted that many wall signs in the Elmhurst Crossing Shopping Center across the street were allowed to exceed 25 square feet because of the need for customers to see them from busy Route 83. According to the city, no other variation requests are expected.
