Eatery Theft, Gift Card Scam: Elmhurst Cops
Trays of bread were stolen from a local restaurant, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving a restaurant theft, a gift card scam, stolen cigarettes, a replaced stolen item, a turned-in FOID card and a suspicious car, among other incidents. Here is information from the latest Elmhurst police reports:
Restaurant theft
- Someone stole several bread trays between midnight and 5:30 a.m. Thursday from the back of Portillo's, 155 S. Route 83.

- A resident in the 400 block of North Highland Avenue told police Sunday that he provided access to his computer and bank account information to a stranger. The suspect posed as an employee from a virus protection company. The resident also bought Target gift cards and provided the suspect with the cards' security codes.
Cigarettes taken
- Someone stole three boxes of cigarettes between 5:40 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. Thursday from an unlocked trailer in the 700 block of North Industrial Drive.
Stolen converters

- A catalytic converter was stolen from a car between July 1 and Oct. 12 on Elm Creek Drive. The owner said he was out of the country for several months and had left his car parked on the south side of the apartment complex.
- A catalytic converter was stolen between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Wednesday from a car parked in the lot at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill Road.
Bag of clothing stolen
- Someone stole a bag containing clothing between 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Thursday in the 700 block of South Parkside Avenue. The package was scheduled for pickup by a clothing rental company.
Stolen item replaced
- Someone stole a slow cooker and replaced it with a smaller model in a locked storage unit at the Elm Creek Apartments, 1 Elm Creek Drive. It happened about 8:30 a.m. Saturday. There were no signs of forced entry.
Fugitive driver
- An officer tried to stop a black Chrysler 300 about 10 p.m. Saturday near Church and Grand because of a window tint violation. The driver sped away, last seen heading north on Route 83.
FOID card turned in
- A person turned in his firearm owner's identification card, or FOID, Sunday at the Elmhurst police station after receiving a letter that it had been revoked.
Damage in parking garage
- An officer discovered graffiti and a damaged fire extinguisher box about 8 a.m. Sunday at the city's parking garage at 149 N. Addison Ave. Public works was notified.
Suspicious car
- An officer spotted a suspicious car about 3 a.m. Monday near Emroy and Grantley. The driver was found to have a head injury. The driver, who was confused and unaware of how the injury occurred, was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
