Elmhurst Changing Parking Rule Near Park

Neighbors pressed the city to change the regulation, saying it would be better for all concerned.

ELMHURST, IL – Residents near Ben Allison Park in Elmhurst recently expressed concern about a parking rule on their street, the city said.

So the City Council is changing it.

Now, parking is only allowed on the east side of West Avenue between Randolph and Surf streets. That is the side next to the houses.

On Monday, the council plans to vote on an ordinance that would move parking to the west side, next to Ben Allison Park. Last week, it approved the policy underlying the ordinance.

Last year, the Elmhurst Park District held a public meeting on planned improvements to Ben Allison. Officials heard concerns about the parking rule.

Residents said it was hard to see when backing out of their driveways when park users' cars line the east side of the street, according to a city memo.

They also said it would be safer for park users to be on the west side, so children and families don't need to cross West Avenue.
