Elmhurst Chess Tournament Welcomes Over 275 Students

Parents, students and volunteers welcomed over 275 students from second to 12th grade at the 21st annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament

ELMHURST, IL- Parents, students and volunteers welcomed over 275 students from second to 12th grade at the 21st annual Elmhurst Student Chess Tournament on March 14.

According to the district, the participants represented 14 different public and private schools in Elmhurst. Because of the increased turnout, the York High School Chess Team, along with other student volunteers, were needed to assist on the chess floor. During the tournament, students competed in five timed matches. On the competition floor were six independent judges, six scorekeepers, two pairing software controllers and York’s own chess sponsor, Jeremy Paschke, as the MC.

First place winners received a trophy; second, third and fourth place winners received ribbons. The standings for top winners in the 2017 competition are as follows.

For second grade:

  • 1st- William Grane, Visitation
  • 2nd- Jonah Roemmich, Timothy Christian
  • 3rd- Ved Sule, Field
  • 4th- Nicholas Stangarone, Visitation
