Elmhurst May Reverse Stop Sign Decision

A school bus stop at the intersection makes the recent action problematic, two aldermen said.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst may consider reversing its recent decision to convert a four-way stop to a two-way.

The intersection in question is Glenview Avenue and Third Street.

The action was taken in response to a study of the neighborhood's traffic earlier this year.

In a memo this week, Ward 2 aldermen Jacob Hill and Karen Sienko said the study did not take into account a nearby school bus stop.

"Since the change was put into effect, aldermen and city staff have been alerted to the fact that there are numerous schoolchildren picked up by school buses at this intersection, which lacks sidewalks," the aldermen said.

During the winter, children are forced to wait at times on the plowed street, Hill and Sienko said.

"Since this is also a cut-through area for vehicular traffic, the safety issue appears to be compounded," the aldermen said.

At its meeting Monday, the City Council plans to vote on whether to send the issue to a committee.
