Elmhurst Police Station Older Than Most In Area: Study

Of DuPage towns surveyed, only four had older stations, the city found.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst's police station is older than most in DuPage County, according to a city study.

Officials are considering whether to replace the police station or rebuild it.

Earlier this month, the city finished its comparisons with 23 other police departments in DuPage County.

The average police station among the departments was built in 2002. Elmhurst's was constructed in 1990.

Four towns – Downers Grove, Lombard, Bloomingdale and Oak Brook – are the only ones with older stations. All were built in the mid-1970s.

According to the city, Downers Grove is building a new station, while Oak Brook did a major remodeling four years ago. A new police station has been proposed in Lombard.

Elmhurst's police station is on the small side with its square footage, given the city has the authority to hire 68 sworn officers.

Elmhurst's station is 31,300 square feet. That compares to Bensenville's 56,000-square-foot station. Bensenville has about half of Elmhurst's police force.
