Forgotten Guns, Burglary: Elmhurst Cops

A business reported that a customer left behind two guns, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In the last few days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving guns left behind, a burglary, a gun scam, inappropriate statements, sexual assault, trespassing and a stolen car. Here is information from the latest reports:

Guns left behind

  • A customer left two guns Wednesday after checking out from Courtyard by Marriott, 370 N. Route 83. The guns were placed into evidence for safekeeping. An investigation is pending.

  • Five people fled from Elmhurst BMW, 500 W. Lake St., in a dark blue Jeep Grand Cherokee about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The five had broken into the business. No items were reported stolen.

Wallet theft

  • About 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a woman was shopping at Mariano's, 678 N. York St., when someone stole her wallet from her purse. She later found a fraudulent transaction at a Sam's Club store. The woman notified her bank.

  • A resident in the 200 block of North Ridgeland bought an antique gun online and transferred money to the seller. However, the gun was never shipped. The resident later discovered the sale was fraudulent. The crime was reported Tuesday.

Attempted burglary

  • A woman was believed to have attempted to burglarize a house about 3:30 p.m. Monday in the 100 block of North Highland Avenue. The owner was alerted by her alarm company that her back door may have been tampered with. When the owner arrived home, she discovered damage to the interior trim of the house. Camera footage showed an unknown woman walking up to the house and then walking away. An investigation is pending.

Suspicious

  • Four men wearing construction-type shirts in a black BMW sedan were in the 400 block of North Howard Avenue about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Two of the men got out of the car and approached several houses. The men got back in the car and drove away.

Stolen during test drive

  • A resident in the 900 block of Kirk Avenue told police that someone took his Vespa scooter for a test drive Monday afternoon and never returned it. The resident said he posted his scooter for sale on Facebook Marketplace and communicated with the suspect. An investigation is pending.

Inappropriate statements

  • A woman at a business at 215 W. Wrightwood Ave. told police that someone made inappropriate statements that made her feel uncomfortable about 6 p.m. Monday. She requested a no-trespass notice be given to the person. An investigation is pending.

Sexual assault

  • An officer was called to Elmhurst Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Road, because of a patient who suffered a sexual assault in Chicago. The person refused to speak with police and declined an investigation. The case was referred to Chicago police.

Trespassing

  • A former employee showed up about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Latini, 893 N. Industrial Drive, holding a rope with a wooden dart attached. The former employee was served with a no-trespass notice.

Stolen car

  • An unoccupied car was found about 3 p.m. Tuesday near Roosevelt and York. The car appeared to have been involved in a crash. Police found that the car was reported stolen in Chicago. They contacted the registered owner and Chicago police.

Missing semi-truck

  • On Tuesday, an employee at Super Ego Logistics, 677 N. Larch Ave., conducted a fleet inventory and discovered a semi-truck was missing from the lot. The truck was later tracked to Old Bridge, New Jersey. Officers in that jurisdiction responded to that area, but could not find the vehicle.

Found bicycles

  • A resident in the 600 block of South Mitchell Avenue on Wednesday discovered a 26-inch white and silver Hyper bicycle and a red Standoff bicycle in her fenced yard that did not belong to her. The bikes were placed into evidence for safekeeping.

Warrant

  • Raymond D. Prewitt, 53, of Yorkville, was arrested about 1 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of West Lake Street on a Kendall County Sheriff's Office warrant. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
