Guns At Hotel, Repair Fraud: Elmhurst Cops
A hotel guest leaves and then calls to say guns were left behind, police said.

ELMHURST, IL – In recent days, Elmhurst police handled cases involving guns left at a hotel, repair fraud, someone who pumps gas and runs, threatening messages, retail theft and a domestic disturbance, among other incidents. Here is information from the latest police reports:
Guns left in the nightstand
- The Courtyard by Marriott, 370 N. Route 83, told police that a guest checked out of a room Sunday and then called to say that two guns were accidentally left in the nightstand. An officer obtained the guns and placed them into evidence.

- A resident in the 700 block of North Kenilworth Avenue told police Friday that he paid an unknown contractor for foundation work to be done on his patio in May. The contractor never started the work and has not returned the resident's money.
Pump and run
- A man filled his car with 20 gallons of premium gasoline and left without paying about 7 p.m. Thursday at Thornton's, 476 N. York St. An investigation is pending. The man was described as white, 25 to 45 years old, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-11, having brown curly hair, and wearing a red T-shirt, dark pants and dark shoes.
Threatening messages

- A resident in the 600 block of North West Avenue told police Thursday that he has received threatening emails from a suspended employee. An officer contacted the suspect and told him to have no further contact with the resident.
Throwing items
- A man was throwing items at cars about 11 p.m. Friday near York Street and Interstate 290. He was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. He was taken to the police station. Charges are pending.
Retail theft
- Kevin Syas, 48, of Chicago, was arrested about 11 a.m. Sunday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St., on charges of burglary, retail theft (two counts) and resisting a police officer. Officers responded to a retail theft in progress. Although Syas resisted arrest, officers were able to gain control of him. He was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
- Two men were seen on video surveillance stealing alcohol about 11 p.m. Thursday at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller St. One of them was described as black, heavy set, and wearing black pants and a black T-shirt with "Gucci" on the front in white over red print. The other was described as black, thin, having a beard and mustache, and wearing black sweatpants with a white logo on the front left thigh, a black hoodie sweatshirt, a white T-shirt and a white skull cap.
Domestic disturbance
- Police responded to a domestic disturbance about 9 p.m. Friday at 7-Eleven, 155 E. First St. Two people were arguing. No one appeared injured, so no arrests were made.
Stolen bikes
- A student left her bicycle unlocked between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Friday near the workout facility at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road. When she returned, the bike was gone. It was a black and blue Trek 180 WSD bicycle. Another unlocked bike on a rack at the high school was stolen between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. the same night. It was a black and blue Schwinn Thrasher bicycle.
Damage to house
- Someone damaged the front door and lock of a house about noon Thursday in the 100 block of West Fremont Avenue. An investigation is pending.
Identity theft
- A resident in the 400 block of North Highview Avenue told police Thursday that someone opened a Chase business account in his name. The account was closed. No money was lost.
- A resident in the 200 block of North Myrtle Avenue told police Thursday that someone contacted her through social media asking whether she wanted to deposit money through an app to receive a check for a larger amount.
