Leyden's LIFE Transition program annual alumni dance

The much anticipated event included an Italian buffet dinner and dancing to the music of DJ Joe Meglio.

“This event has been the highlight of the year for many Leyden graduates who can’t wait to reconnect with their former classmates and teachers, and make new friends as well,” says Mark Bernstein, a teacher who works with adults ages 18-22 at Leyden’s LIFE Transition Center located in Franklin Park. “Every spring we are flooded with phone calls and emails asking when the dance will be this year. We have been hosting the dance for 18 years, and the event continues to grow as new Transition graduates join in the fun.”

According to Bernstein, the LIFE Transition program encourages students to make connections in school that extend throughout their lives as independent adults. To that end, participants work on life skills such as self-advocacy, independent living, vocational training, community access and social communication.

“Beyond just academics and practical life skills, the social bonds they form when are with us will hopefully bring them the loving support that only true friendship can provide,” Bernstein says. “As teachers, it just doesn't get any more satisfying then to watch generations of our students laughing, dancing and having a good time together.”
