Local eBay Expert Shares Spring Cleaning Tips

Amy VanderMolen, owner of iSOLD It in Elmhurst, shares tips to keep homes clutter-free

Spring is in the air, and there is no better way to kick off the start to a new season than a clean, clutter-free home. While indeed a refreshing and necessary annual task, the practice of spring-cleaning can be both daunting and burdensome for many individuals.

According to a study conducted by the Huffington Post , home organization is one of the most universal triggers for stress, accounting for nearly 47 percent of Americans. Spring cleaning is a long-storied tradition aimed to help reduce this exact kind of stress, but what happens when all of that clutter piles back up?

In honor of National Cleaning Week (March 26 to April 1), Amy VanderMolen, local eBay expert and owner of iSOLD It in Elmhurst, has provided insightful tips on how local residents make the most out of spring cleaning efforts to de-clutter and de-stress their homes and lives:

  • Get rid of the trash ASAP: It sounds like a no-brainer, but many people go through the entire spring cleaning process only to end up with more in their “trash” pile than they know what to do with. To avoid this scenario, purge as you clean each room instead of leaving it all until the end. From junk drawers to entire rooms, everyone has unwanted or unused items lying around – and possibly a lot of value! Start going through your things and sort them into piles:
    • Keepsakes
    • Junk/Trash
    • Re-sale items
  • Sell unwanted or unused items: It’s estimated that the average person has around $2,500 in valuable items laying around their house – chances are, a chunk of that could be coming from your spring cleaning pile. Resale shops, such as iSOLD It in Elmhurst, can help bring in some extra income and make all of that hard spring cleaning work actually pay off. Some of the top-selling items include: old electronics, musical instruments, designer handbags, antiques, sporting gear, bicycles and original art, especially paintings.
  • Donate what you can’t sell: There’s always someone who can use what you have to give away. Consider taking your gently used items to local donation collection sites to let your old items live on. Donation needs often include new or lightly used clothing, toiletries, cleaning supplies, household goods and furniture in good condition.
