New Elmhurst Assistant City Manager Recommended

The City Council is expected to vote on the appointment next week.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst's city engineer has been recommended as the new assistant city manager.

On Tuesday, the City Council plans to vote on Kent Johnson to replace Mike Kopp as assistant city manager. Kopp retired Jan. 2.

In a memo Thursday, City Administrator Jim Grabowski said Johnson has progressed within the public works department and has taken on more responsibility and supervision.

Johnson is in charge of numerous infrastructure improvement projects. And he has played a big role in the city's 13 flood control projects since 2015, Grabowski said.

"Mr. Johnson frequently interacts with residents regarding drainage issues, development projects and road paving projects," Grabowski said in the memo.

Johnson has been with the city for 15 years. He holds master's and bachelor's degrees in civil engineering from the University of North Dakota.

Kopp was with the city for 40 years. He spent most of that time in the fire department, rising to chief. Then he became the assistant city manager.
