Is Oak Brook Suspect Really Serving 3 Years?
An official explained the sentence for a woman accused of burglary and retail theft.
OAK BROOK, IL – DuPage County prosecutors announced this week that a Chicago woman was sentenced to three years in prison for the felonies of burglary and retail theft in Oak Brook.
After Patch reported the prosecutors' statement, a reader questioned whether 30-year-old Peaches P. Johnson really would serve three years.
Like most defendants, she received credit for time served – 449 days. Under Illinois law, her prison sentence could drop in half if she behaves well in prison.

With that reduction, she would serve about three months going forward.
But some people may not see the 449 days as the equivalent of prison. That's because she was in home confinement during that time, wearing an electronic ankle bracelet, said Paul Darrah, a spokesman for the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

In Illinois, such confinement counts for credit for a prison sentence, Darrah said in an interview.
Under home confinement, defendants are often permitted to go to work, doctor appointments and meetings with their lawyers, Darrah said.
In their news release this week, prosecutors reported on the sentences for Johnson and Roy Crane, 22, also of Chicago. Four other suspects were involved, authorities said.
In the early evening of Nov. 12, 2021, five of the suspects, all wearing hoodies and ski masks, ran into Ulta Beauty, 2155 W. 22nd St., prosecutors said in the news release.
At least three of them pulled out garbage bags and cleared off shelves of fragrances, police said.
During the crime, Oak Brook police were notified by Chicago police that a vehicle suspected of being involved in illegal activity in Norridge was in front of Ulta, the release said. By the time officers arrived, the suspects were gone.
The suspects' car was seen on Interstate 294, prompting Hinsdale police to shut down the highway and take the suspects into custody, the news release said.
