Targeted By Scam Outside Elmhurst Stores?

People are asked to give donations via their credit cards, authorities said.

ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst has seen its second recent example of a scam targeting people outside grocery stores.

Late the afternoon of Sept. 26, a man provided credit card information to two strangers collecting donations at Mariano's, 678 N. York St., police said. He later discovered fraudulent charges.

The victim reported the crime Thursday, a month and a half later.

The first suspect was described as a black man, in his mid-30s, 6-foot-2, skinny, and having short black hair and a beard. The second suspect was described as a black man, in his mid-30s, 5-foot-8, heavy, and having short black hair.

Police reported a similar scam outside Jewel, 944 S. York St., on Oct. 25. The scammers asked for donations, but said they did not accept cash, police said.
