Ways To Cut Costs At Elmhurst Fire Department
The mayor wants to vet a plan to add a new vehicle to the fleet, a move believed to save money.
ELMHURST, IL – The Elmhurst Fire Department wants to add a new type of vehicle to its fleet, with an official describing it as a cost-saving move.
The vehicle, known as a rescue squad, is estimated to cost $215,000 to $250,000, depending on what it includes.
Despite the cost, Fire Chief Bill Anaszewicz said Monday the new vehicle would save money by offsetting the use of the department's larger trucks.

Often, the department takes its largest trucks to emergency medical service calls.
"By buying this rescue squad, that will help offset the wear and tear on the ladder truck," Anaszewicz told the City Council.

At the same time, the department is looking at refurbishing one of its oldest engines, adding seven to 10 years to its life, he said.
"It will be like a new engine coming off the assembly line to us," Anaszewicz said.
Mayor Scott Levin said the fire department's plan sounded like a good concept. But he called for a closer examination because the vehicle would be a large expenditure.
"I'm not saying whether it's justified or not justified," the mayor said. "I'm saying that I would like to have them vet it a little bit more carefully."
Anaszewicz presented the proposed purchase during a City Council budget meeting.
