ELMHURST, IL – Elmhurst this week released a traffic study for a northeast side neighborhood.

The area under review is bounded by Wrightwood Avenue on the north, the city limit on the east, Interstate 290 on the south and York Street on the west.

The neighborhood mainly consists of single-family houses and includes Crestview Park.

  • Belden Avenue with Michigan Street, with eight crashes
  • Gladys Avenue with Michigan Street, with three crashes
  • Van Auken Street with Armitage Avenue, with five crashes, one involving a bicyclist
  • Van Auken Street with Belden Avenue, with three crashes, one involving a pedestrian

All other intersections had one or no crashes during the period, the consultant said.

As for Belden and Michigan's eight crashes, all occurred before the city replaced yield signs on Michigan with stop signs in spring 2025, according to the traffic study.

For the last few years, the city has hired KLOA to analyze traffic neighborhood-by-neighborhood.

The consultant has generally suggested replacing yield signs with stop signs – advice that most aldermen accept.

For Elmhurst's northeast side, the consultant recommends replacing yields with stops at these intersections:

  • North End Avenue with Michigan Street
  • Fullerton Avenue with Michigan Street
  • Fullerton Avenue with Kenilworth Avenue
  • Fullerton Avenue with Willow Road
  • Belden Avenue with Willow Road
  • Crestview Avenue with Willow Road
  • Gladys Avenue with Kenilworth Avenue
  • Gladys Avenue with Indiana Street
  • Gladys Avenue with Howard Avenue

KLOA also suggests putting up two-way stops at intersections with no traffic control now:

  • On Howard Avenue at North End Avenue
  • On Emory Avenue at North End Avenue
  • On Lombard Street at North End Avenue
  • On Eastland Street at North End Avenue
  • On Geneva Avenue at North End Avenue
  • On Howard Avenue at Fullerton Avenue
  • On Emory Avenue at Fullerton Avenue

  • On Eastland Street at Fullerton Avenue
  • On Geneva Avenue at Fullerton Avenue
  • On Howard Avenue at Fullerton Avenue
  • On Emory Avenue at Fullerton Avenue
  • On Emory Avenue at Gladys Avenue
  • On Wrightwood Avenue at Van Auken Street

At T-intersections with no traffic control, the consultant recommends one-way stops:

  • North End Avenue with Parker Street
  • Fullerton Avenue with Parker Street
  • Belden Avenue with Lombard Street
  • Belden Avenue with Eastland Street
  • Belden Avenue with Geneva Avenue
  • Gladys Avenue with Adele Street
  • Armitage Avenue with Indiana Street

The City Council's public safety committee plans to discuss the traffic study at 6:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
