York Students Take Top Placement At State Science Contest

Two York students were awarded first place in their specific category.

ELMHURST, IL — The York Science Olympiad team recently competed at the State competition, held at the University of Illinois, and several students were given awards. The district said York's team competed in the A division, ranking eighth overall.

Awards earned by the team include:

  • Astronomy: Fifth place - Alex Swinford and Eric Doberstein
  • Disease Detectives: Fifth place - Eva Jacobsthal and Emaan Mohsin
  • Dynamic Planet: First place - Grant Hartlage and Peter Hartlage
  • Fermi Questions: Second place - Grant Hartlage and Peter Hartlage
  • Forensics: Fourth place - Collin Kelley and Gracie Chiampas
  • Optics: Fourth place - Joe Black and Jacob Wit
  • Remote Sensing: Fifth place - Elysia Woodward and Jacob Wit
  • Write it Do it: Third place - Eric Doberstein and Christian Glosner

The team is coached by York physics teacher Jeremy Paschke, as well as science teachers Jeff Drach and Elizabeth Ferhati. The school said the Illinois' State Science Olympiad Tournament had 49 high school and 49 middle school teams in the competition.
