2 Shot Near Twiggs Park In Evanston: Police

No one is in custody after two men were wounded when "numerous shots" were fired Friday afternoon on Payne Street near Dewey Avenue.

EVANSTON, IL — Police are investigating a shooting that wounded two men were Friday near Twiggs Park in Evanston. Around 12:30 p.m., police were called to area of Payne Street and Dewey Avenue, where they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Ryan Glew.

One man had been hit in his leg and hand. The other was struck on his buttocks. Neither man's injuries were considered life threatening, according to Evanston police.

Police were told two or three unidentified men wearing dark clothes approached the pair in the 1700 block of Payne Street and began shooting.

"Numerous shots were fired," Glew said. "They fled northbound to, presumably, a waiting vehicle."

Glew said police were not yet certain how many shooters were involved. No guns were found at the scene as officers continued to investigate shell casings left behind and canvass the area for evidence and witnesses.

Friday's incident was at least the fourth shooting of the year in Evanston. In May, two people were believed to have been shot in the 1800 block of Darrow Avenue before fleeing to Wilmette where their car broke down. In June, a man was shot in the 1600 block of Evanston after a parking lot dispute. In July, one person was wounded in a shooting at Foster Street and Jackson Avenue.

With just over two months remaining in 2019, Evanston has recorded one homicide this year — the March 8 fatal shooting of Angel Miranda near the corner of Simpson Street and Dodge Avenue, a few blocks from where the two men were found shot Friday. Miranda's accused killer, 38-year-old Sandoval Cobian, remains held at Cook County Jail without bond awaiting trial.
