Evanston Teen Charged With Having Stolen Loaded Gun: Police (patch.com) — Evanston police say a traffic stop led to the arrest of 18-year-old resident Billy Price Jr., who allegedly fled on foot before later returning to the scene. Officers report finding cannabis and a loaded stolen handgun in the car’s back seat, and prosecutors have approved felony firearm and misdemeanor cannabis charges connected to the Evanston incident.
2. Two more Community Fridges on the way (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston Community Fridges is adding two new public refrigerators at Grace Lutheran on South Boulevard and St. Andrew’s on Darrow, expanding to five locations citywide. Residents can drop off food or pick up what they need, anonymously and without surveillance, and organizers are seeking co-managers and volunteers as opening dates are finalized.
3. Local unemployment rate holds steady (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston’s unemployment rate held steady at 4.4% in April, slightly higher than a year ago but below February’s level. Local joblessness remains better than the Chicago metro and Illinois overall, which continue to post some of the nation’s highest state unemployment rates.
4. Evanston Public Library seeks search firm to find next executive director (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston Public Library is officially launching a search for its next executive director and is now soliciting proposals from executive search firms, due June 12. With interim director Heather Norborg in place, trustees will continue planning the transition at their next public board meeting on June 17 at the main branch.
5. City to begin street resurfacing project on seven segments over next 12 weeks (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston is launching a 12-week street resurfacing project starting the week of June 8, affecting seven street segments across the city with no direct cost to adjacent property owners. Expect intermittent daytime no-parking zones, but overnight parking and relaxed nearby parking and sweeping rules will help ease disruptions. Residents will be notified at least 48 hours before work begins on their block.
