Army Veteran Dies in Sunday Morning Crash

The Evanston man was trapped under a car when it flipped on Dodge Avenue. The driver remains in serious condition.

A 45-year-old Evanston man died Sunday after a vehicle he was a passenger in struck multiple cars and rolled over in the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue.

According to police, Lamart Bailey, a U.S. Army veteran, was trapped underneath the 1998 Nissan when it flipped around 2:20 a.m. Sunday. He was extricated by the Evanston Fire Department, but died shortly after being taken to Evanston NorthShore University Hospital.

The driver - a 42-year-old female from Evanston - is alleged to have struck multiple cars on the block, with the car rolling over and coming to a rest in front of 1730 Dodge Avenue, according to police.

She is recovering at Evanston Hospital in serious, but stable, condition.

Officers from the Evanston Police Department’s Traffic Bureau, along with assistance from the North Regional Major Crimes Task Force / Major Crash Assistance Team, are investigating the crash. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol and/or drugs are a factor.
