Columnist Georgia Garvey Shares Her Humorous Take on Life in New Book

Does thinking about the inevitability of death reassure you? If you’re like Georgia Garvey, a writer and mom of two young kids, it just might.

After being published for years in The Chicago Tribune, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times and more, Garvey’s award-winning columns are now being compiled for the first time in her new book, Everything Is Going To Be OK (Until It’s Not) (Creators Publishing), which gives an at-times raucous, frequently thoughtful and always soulful take on living the perfect (or imperfect) modern life.

In the book, Garvey tackles topics like disposing of dead squirrels, getting your kids interested in Greek Easter, how parents survived pandemic lockdowns and the exact age a woman becomes over the hill (just ask Don Lemon). There’s also an explanation of the book’s title, which, when you really think about it (like, super, super hard), isn’t quite as depressing as it sounds.

Along the way, readers encounter a cast of characters including a ghost faucet, a fierce Greek Yia-Yia, deceptive leprechauns, and a parrot that communicates solely through Portuguese curse words. Plus, just in time for the hectic holiday season, there’s the world’s only honest Christmas cookie recipe, with explicit permission for the chef to enjoy them all.

Garvey is a first-generation Greek immigrant, a factoid of which she is certain to inform you within five minutes of sitting down next to her. It continues to interest her that, growing up, she was considered an American in Greece and a Greek in America.

After coming to America as a child, Garvey moved around the country a lot, and eventually ended up in Chicago, where she graduated from Columbia College with a degree in print journalism. Soon, she went on to work as a reporter and editor at the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, Ill., and the Chicago Tribune, before becoming the editor-in-chief of 34 publications in the Chicago Tribune Media Group, including the Lake County News-Sun and the Pioneer Press newspapers.

During the pandemic, Garvey began writing a lifestyle column for the Pioneer Press, which was later syndicated by Creators Publishing, where it runs in dozens of local newspapers across the country.

She now lives on Chicago’s North Shore with her husband and two boys, ages 7 and 5, where she works as a writer and editor out of a fantastic old house that her husband (who has to fix everything) likes a lot less than she does. Every February, she considers moving to a place where your eyelashes don’t freeze on the way to the car, and every June, she asks herself why anyone would ever want to leave the Midwest.
