Demolition Problems/Problemas con la Demolición

The demolition on the Northwestern campus destroys our cultural treasures. The demolition is a disaster and tragedy. It was completely preventable, but the city government didn’t care about what is important. The supporters of the project in the government and the university said there wouldn’t be demolition without concerts. But the concerts may still not happen due to the lawsuit. If this were true that there wouldn’t be demolition without concerts, Northwestern would wait until the lawsuit was decided to proceed with demolition. But they didn’t wait. According to city ordinance, a building permit approval is not expedited, but the whole process for approval with the demolition was rushed. Also, we were told that demolition wouldn’t begin until March or April at the earliest. But then they started earlier! Also, the city approved two demolition permits without having the all utilities turned off and sealed off beforehand as required by city ordinance. This document from the City Clerk’s office shows that the utilities were not all shut off before the demolition permits were approved. Also, shutting off the water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer according to ordinance requires sealing them off at their respective mains, which requires opening the street. Street openings require right of way permits, which are not supposed to be issued for street openings from November 15-March 31. Both the demolition permits were issued during this time frame.

Additionally, Northwestern would have had to do demolition in the practice field and Wildcat Alley even before the demolition permits were issued, since administrative buildings, parking, and portable toilets are here.

The demolition of the maintenance building was approved without listing its address (1515 Central).

Also, the whole project, as shown in the lawsuit, was planned and approved in private meetings that were against the Open Meetings Act. Additionally, the concerts were approved without the six-vote majority required by state law for rezoning.

Northwestern is proposing destroying Sharon J. Drysdale Field and Martin Stadium, in addition to renovations at Norris University Center and the Deering Library. Northwestern and the city must respect cultural resources! This destruction must be stopped! All that is left of the campus must be saved! Things must be rebuilt as they were before!

Any community benefits are simply not worth it! It doesn’t matter how much money is spent. These things are priceless and have historic value!

La demolición en el plantel de la Universidad Noroccidental destruye tesoros culturales. La demolición es un desastre y una tragedia. Fue completamente evitable, pero al gobierno no le importaba lo que era crítico. Los proponentes del proyecto en el gobierno y la universidad dijeron que no habrá demolición sin conciertos. Pero aún los conciertos pueden no pasar debido a la demanda. También, el proyecto entero, como lo demuestra la demanda, fue planeado y aprobado en conferencias privadas que violaron el Acto de Conferencias Abiertas. Adicionalmente, los conciertos fueron aprobados sin la mayoría de seis votos requeridos para rezonificación por ley estatal.

La Universidad Noroccidental está proponiendo destruir la Cancha de Sharon J. Drysdale y el Estadio Martin, además de renovaciones en el Centro Universitario Norris y la Biblioteca Deering. ¡La Universidad Noroccidental y la ciudad deben respetar los recursos culturales! ¡La destrucción necesita parar! ¡Todo lo que queda del plantel se debe salvar! ¡Las cosas necesitan ser reconstruidas como eran antes!

¡Cualquier beneficio comunitario simplemente no vale la pena! No importa cuánto dinero se gasta. Estas cosas no tienen precio, pero sí tienen valor histórico.
