ETHS Students Sick After Eating Pot Brownies

A 17-year-old student has been arrested and charged with possession.

Four Evanston Township High School students were taken to local hospitals with non-life threatening illnesses Feb. 1 after eating marijuana brownies, according to a letter to parents from school superintendent Eric Witherspoon.

An additional student became sick from the brownies but refused treatment, police said.

Evanston police have charged one 17-year-old male student with possession of marijuana.

"It appears the students involved knew what they were eating," Witherspoon said.  "These students will also face school discipline for breaking substance-abuse rules and, if appropriate, extracurricular code sanctions."

Police confirmed that the students voluntarily consumed the pot brownies.

Witherspoon urged parents to talk to their kids about accepting home-baked goods from others.

Witherspoon was not available for comment and ETHS's communications office would not discuss the incident beyond what is in the message to parents.
