Evanston Art Center Announces Weighardt/Kawamura Scholarship

The EAC is extremely honored and excited to announce the Weighardt/Kawamura Scholarship. This scholarship will fund eight full scholarships a year for twenty-five years for students who cannot afford the tuition, based on their financial situation. Along with the scholarships, we proudly name our second floor gallery “The Sueko Kawamura Gallery”. Twenty artists will have the opportunity to exhibit their work in this gallery on an annual basis.

The Evanston Art Center is honored to receive a very generous bequest from Sueko Kawamura. Sueko was an active member of the Art Center for many years. After moving to the United States in 1960, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, majoring in painting and sculpture. “Although Sueko was only 4’9” tall, she was big in talent and in life force” (Chicago Tribune). Along with her great talent, Sueko had a strong dedication to the arts and generous spirit.

The EAC offers 925 classes, workshops, and camps in person and online annually. Although classes are competitively priced we realize that not all people can afford to pay the tuition. Financial aid, scholarships, and payment plans are available each term for any of our EAC classes based on financial need. Recent and prior recipients will be considered for approval if funds are available. Priority is given to first-time applicants. This past year the EAC supplied 85 students with scholarships and turned away 0 students due to financial need.
