EVANSTON, IL — It's primary election day in Evanston and the polls have closed.

Now it's time to count the votes.

Voters today narrowed down their choices for mayor and 5th Ward Alderman.

The candidates for mayor are Gary Gaspard, Steve Hagerty, Brian Miller, Jeff Smith and Mark Tendam.

In order to win Tuesday's primary outright, one candidate needs to get more than 50 percent of the vote.

The candidates for 5th Ward Alderman are Daniel Featherson, Carolyn Murray, Robin Rue, Carlis Sutton and Misty Witenberg.

In that race, the top two vote-getters will head to the April general election regardless of if any of them reach the 50 percent threshold.
