Evanston Woman, 87, Dies After Wilmette Crash

She was pronounced dead Friday evening at Evanston Hospital after crashing into a utility pole.

WILMETTE, IL — An Evanston woman died Friday after crashing into a telephone pole in Wilmette, authorities said.

Emilie Barry, 87, of the 2600 block of Princeton Avenue, was involved in a crash around 3 p.m. in the 2100 block of Old Glenview Road. She was taken to Evanston Hospital and pronounced dead around 7:15 p.m., according to Wilmette police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Barry was driving alone in a 2009 Toyota Prius east when it veered off the road and crashed into a pole on the east side of the street, according to police. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The medical examiner's office ruled Barry's death an accident caused by injuries from a car striking a fixed object.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force's Major Crash Assistance Team is investigating the incident, according to police. There was no indication of alcohol or drugs being a factor in the crash, but it was not known if Barry may have suffered a medical emergency before driving off the road.
