Evanston Woman Avoids Prison for Neglecting Elderly Mother

Police say the elderly woman was covered in feces when she was found at her daughter's home last June.

Instead, a judge at the Skokie Courthouse this week sentenced Margaret M. Flaherty, 50, to 30 months of probation, according to the Evanston Review. During the sentence, Flaherty will be subject to undergo treatment for drug and alcohol use and have no contact with her mother.

Authorities claimed Flaherty “knowingly failed to provide hygiene, nutrition, prescribed medication and medical care to maintain her mother’s health” when she was arrested last June.

Flaherty neglected her mother, who was found in bed lying in feces in urine, from September 2014 to May 2015. During that time, she would go several days without being bathed and her weight dropped to 84 pounds.
