Obituary for Laura Newhall Nelson

Laura Newhall Nelson, 60, of Glenview, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2023 at Glenbrook Hospital after a courageous battle with colon cancer. Laura lived in Evanston as a young woman and still has many friends living in Evanston today.

Born April 9, 1962, Laura was blessed with an abundance of energy that she applied to a wide range of projects and activities throughout her life. From general contractor on her new family home, to landscape architect in her own backyard, Laura drew up plans, planted gardens, built fire pits, hung drywall, and framed doors. She took an idea and brought it to life. She was a creator, an innovator, and a go-getter.

Laura enjoyed enduring, loving relationships with both family and a circle of lifelong friends, but the role she most cherished in life was being the mother of her three sons, Peter, Christopher, and Matthew. She believed they were her greatest contribution to the world, and in her final days made plans that would ensure their future without her.

Laura was a compassionate woman who helped family members struggling with serious health issues. In recent years, Laura provided lengthy, selfless care to both her dying father Donald and ailing ex-husband Jim when they were most in need.

Laura loved her German Shepherds. From Molly, the original family dog, to her most recent "puppy dog" Nellie, Laura made sure all her dogs were well cared for and treated like members of the family. One of Laura's dogs, Velma, was a rescue that she arranged to have brought to the U.S., saving her from terrible circumstances in Qatar. Between Molly and Velma was Emma. While not chasing the family cats, Timon and Pumba, Emma was always by Laura’s side. Laura shared a special connection with all of her animals.

Laura was extremely proud of the dental practice she successfully managed for over 40 years. Throughout those years she created long lasting relationships with many who passed through the office doors. Many of those friends and acquaintances reached out to Laura after she was initially diagnosed with cancer.

Preceded in death by her father Donald Newhall, mother Catherine Newhall (née Carhart), brother James Newhall and sister Elizabeth Newhall. She is survived by her brother Bob Newhall and former husband, Jim Nelson and their three children, Peter, Matthew and Christopher. A private family service will be held in the near future. Donations may be made to the ASPCA in honor of Laura's life.
