District 65 Selects Advisory Group For Superintendent Search (patch.com) — Evanston/Skokie District 65 has tapped Alma Advisory Group to guide the search for its next superintendent, pending contract approval. Board members say they want a "generational leader" who understands District 65, improves academic outcomes, and actively incorporates Evanston community voices throughout an inclusive search process.
   

2. Commission surveys Northwestern-owned properties; preservation planner says none require demolition (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston's Preservation Commission just walked 11 Northwestern-owned vacant properties and found that, while some are deteriorating, none currently warrant demolition. Neighbors, preservationists and city officials are pressing NU to repair historic buildings like Roycemore and Willard Hall, ahead of a Sept. 3 property standards hearing and a Sept. 8 commission meeting that could shape future maintenance and potential housing uses.
   

3. Old phone week (evanstonnow.com) — An Evanston-based teacher who graduated from Evanston Township High School is using rotary and touch-tone phones at her Chicago classroom to help seniors practice real-world communication for college and job opportunities. She's seeking donations of old phones from the community to support mock calls and other "throwback" exercises that build confidence for students who may be first-generation college-goers.
   

4. Syracuse women's soccer scores late to defeat Northwestern (fingerlakes1.com subscription) — Northwestern's women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Syracuse on a last-minute penalty kick in Evanston on Thursday night. The Wildcats outshot Syracuse but couldn't break through, while Orange goalkeeper Maya Naimoli secured a shutout to keep Syracuse unbeaten through three matches.
   

5. Evanston police seek guidance from State's Attorney on prosecuting ICE agents for Midway Blitz actions (chicagotribune.com) — Evanston officials are asking the Cook County State's Attorney how they can pursue possible state-level charges against federal immigration agents involved in a violent Halloween raid near Oakton and Asbury. Mayor Daniel Biss says an Illinois commission found reasonable cause to investigate several agents for alleged excessive force, and the Law Enforcement Review Unit is now examining Evanston's case materials while residents remain wary of future ICE activity.
