📰 News we're reading

1. US citizen left injured after mistaken ICE detention in Illinois (wheninyourstate.com) — Evanston police are investigating how a local U.S. citizen ended up injured after federal immigration agents mistakenly detained him near Howard and Dodge on September 20. Witnesses say the man repeatedly asserted his citizenship as agents brought him to the ground, while federal officials claim he resisted and refused identification, leaving key details and responsibility for his injuries still unresolved.

2. ADU requests on track to top last year's count (evanstonnow.com) — Evanston is on track to approve slightly more accessory dwelling unit permits this year than last, but the small numbers mean ADUs are barely denting the city's housing supply. As officials overhaul the zoning code under Envision Evanston 2045, they're weighing preapproved designs and technical assistance to help more homeowners, especially those with lower incomes, build these small units.

3. Ryan Field has special meaning for construction workers (evanstonnow.com) — An Evanston native found a fresh start through the Trade Collective, a local nonprofit that placed him and six others in union carpentry apprenticeships on Northwestern's new Ryan Field project. The program, backed in part by the university and Ryan Family Workforce Development Initiative, aims to connect Evanston youth and adults with long-term, well-paid construction careers on major developments around town.

4. ETHS golf: Golfers score wet win at IHSA regional (evanstonroundtable.com) — Evanston Township High School's golf team braved wind and rain to capture the Class 3A New Trier Regional title, led by junior Lester Low's third straight individual crown. With Evanston golfers sweeping the top three spots and their retiring coach praising their mental toughness, the Wildkits now head to the Glenbrook South Sectional with strong momentum.

5. DERA members discuss 900 Clark ahead of City Council appearance (evanstonroundtable.com) — Downtown Evanston residents are ramping up opposition to the proposed 298‑foot high‑rise at 900 Clark Street as the project heads to City Council, possibly as soon as October 12. Members of the Downtown Evanston Residents Association argue the tower's height, wind effects, traffic, and potential impact on property values outweigh its promised affordable units, and are lobbying aldermen hard before the vote.
