📰 News we're reading

1. 200+ Cited, 2 Arrested During Labor Day Crackdown In Evanston (patch.com) — Evanston police issued 215 citations and made three arrests during this year's Labor Day traffic safety campaign, targeting speeding, seat belt violations, distracted driving and more on local roads. Funded through state-administered federal grants, the crackdown partnered Evanston officers with other Illinois agencies to highlight the dangers of impaired driving and improve safety for residents traveling around town.

2. Official map shows ban on parking minimums affects most of Evanston (evanstonroundtable.com) — Most of Evanston now falls under a new state parking-minimum ban near busy transit routes and hubs, potentially reshaping local development and zoning decisions. The Northern Illinois Transit Authority has published the official map, is taking public comments until Oct. 9, and is also expanding reduced transit fares for SNAP riders on CTA and Pace starting Oct. 1.

3. Folk fans brave lakeside heat to hear their favorites (evanstonnow.com) — Crowds packed Evanston's lakefront Saturday for the Evanston Folk Festival, filling Dawes Park, Arrington Lagoon and nearby venues despite the heat. With big-name headliners, multiple stages, kids' activities and limited single-day tickets still available, the festival continues through Sunday with music, talks and community art just steps from Evanston neighborhoods.

4. ETHS educators reflect on teaching 9 (dailynorthwestern.com) — ETHS teachers in Evanston are rethinking how they teach 9/11 to students who were born long after the attacks, blending personal memories with primary sources and discussions of Islamophobia and war. Their approaches, including affinity summits and museum-based training, aim to humanize the tragedy while helping Evanston teens understand how it still shapes their daily world.

5. Influencers are urging Home Depot and Lowe's to drop Flock (businessinsider.com subscription) — Evanston is among the cities moving to end contracts with Flock Safety, the license-plate reader company now facing fresh pressure from influencers targeting Home Depot and Lowe's. Digital rights advocates argue the cameras risk misuse against immigrants and people of color, while Flock and retailers say the systems help fight theft and crime. Residents can watch how Evanston's stance fits into this growing national debate over surveillance.
