People Already Claiming Spots Along Central Street Parade Route

"Dibs" has begun two days ahead of the North Evanston 4th of July Parade.

Central Street in North Evanston is already filling up with blankets, patio furniture, benches and baby strollers in anticipation of Saturday’s Fourth of July Parade.

Bob Roberts of CBS-2-Chicago reports the city even had to send out a crew to block off spaces where the reviewing stand will be located so “someone else wouldn’t claim it.”

It’s the North Shore version of “dibs,” Roberts said and it’s a tradition dating back several decades.

Saving one’s spot for the Fourth of July parade got so crazy in years past that some had items out there by Memorial Day. But a recent city ordinance barred the claiming of spots prior to July 1.

“Many who live on or near Central Street abide by the letter of the law — barely,” according to Roberts.
