Salvation Army in Evanston welcomes new officer
Captain Christina Champlin has been appointed Associate Corps Officer at the Salvation Army Evanston Corps Community Center.

Captain Christina Champlin is eager to get to know the community in her new appointment as associate corps officer for The Salvation Army Evanston Corps Community Center.
Capt. Champlin joins Capt. Mary Kim in leading the Evanston Corps. Together, they will oversee all administrative duties, programs, and services. The officers will serve as pastors for Sunday worship services. One of Capt. Champlin’s initial goals is to determine the best ways to reach people safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m looking forward to thinking outside the box, being creative in our approach to people, and connecting with new people in new methods and ways,” said Capt. Champlin.

She takes on a leadership role as the requests for food assistance increased significantly this spring during the pandemic. Between March 12 and July 31, the Evanston Corps:
- Served 952 individuals at the food pantry
- Provided 2,077 groceries, meals, snacks, and home delivered meals
The corps has also been partnering with other churches in Evanston to provide twice weekly lunches for 150 individuals experiencing homelessness. The Salvation Army prepares all of the food, and other churches distribute it.

“The need for The Salvation Army is even greater than it’s been for a long time,” Capt. Champlin said.
She said the Evanston Corps will continue to adapt services to meet the needs of the community during the pandemic, and well after.
“We have never stopped serving,” Champlin said. “While we adapt and change, our mission stays the same. And we won’t compromise that, even during a pandemic.”
Capt. Champlin brings more than a decade of experience in various leadership roles throughout the organization to her new position. She has served throughout the Midwest, including outreach ministry positions in Marion, Ill., Appleton, Wis., and Lakewood, Minn., and corps officer positions in Kirksville, Mo. and Granite City, Ill. before starting her new role in Evanston this summer.
