Studio5 Presents Documentary About Singer Paul Marinaro Sept. 6 & 8

Evanston, Ill. — Chicago jazz singer Paul Marinaro has developed a loyal, devoted legion of fans throughout the years, thanks to his gorgeous vocals, his love of classic jazz favorites, and his unmistakable charm.

Now, fans can learn more about Marinaro’s personal history and the origins of his career in You Will Be My Music, a new documentary by filmmaker Bob Williams. The documentary will be shown at Studio5 in Evanston on Friday, Sept. 6 and Sunday, Sept. 8, along with a Q&A with Williams and Marinaro and a live performance by the Paul Marinaro Quintet.

In the 39-minute film, Williams explores how Marinaro’s career was inspired by his dad, Joseph Marinaro, a devoted husband and father who was never able to pursue his dream of singing professionally. A beautiful and moving tribute to a father’s musical dreams, the film is a love story about a father, son and the power of music bringing people together.

You Will Be My Music first premiered in 2023 at the Buffalo International Film Festival and has since been shown at film festivals in Chicago; Los Angeles; Pittsburgh; Phoenix; San Jose; Morgan Hill, CA; and Saratoga, CA; and won the “Best Central Coast Film 2024 – Audience Award” at the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival. As a jazz singer, Marinaro performs as the front man for his own groups as well as in partnership with other jazz groups such as the Chicago Jazz Orchestra and the Metropolitan Jazz Octet. He is known for his distinctive style and interpretive abilities, and has received praise internationally, producing critically acclaimed recordings, countless varied performances, and tours. His two most recent recordings, Not Quite Yet (2022) and The Bowie Project (2023), have received widespread acclaim. His first album, Without a Song (2013), is also a tribute to his father’s lost dreams of being a singer.

Marinaro was a featured performer at The Chicago Jazz Festival in 2014 and again in 2017 for an audience of 10,000 on the stage at the massive Pritzker Pavilion, where his performance with jazz legend Sheila Jordan earned rave reviews and was named “Best of 2017” (Chicago Tribune). He has earned “Best Performance of the Year” in the Chicago Tribune in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018; and “Best of Chicago 2015” in NewCity Magazine. In addition, Marinaro has just completed a successful Italian tour, singing throughout southern Italy, and in the small towns where his grandparents came from.
