Where To Find Warming Centers In Evanston During Extreme Cold

Friday is the coldest day of the winter season so far, here's where you can find a safe place to stay warm.

EVANSTON, IL — The coldest day of the year so far has arrived in Evanston, and the city has opened warming centers to give residents a safe place to warm up.

The following city facilities are open as warming centers:

  • Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave.
    • Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Robert Crown Community Center, 1801 Main St.
    • Open daily, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Prieto Community Center, 430 Asbury Ave.
    • Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
  • Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St.
    • Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
    • Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 N. McCormick Blvd.
    • Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

People who may need shelter outside of facility hours can contact Evanston 311 at 847-448-4311 or the Evanston Police Department's non-emergency line at 847-866-5000.

During this extreme cold event, schools in Evanston have closed for the day with many moving to e-learning.

The National Weather Service issued an extreme cold warning for the area on Friday, with windchills expected to be dangerous and as low as 35 below zero. Though outside activity is discouraged, officials recommend layering up and putting on a hat, face mask and gloves if you must go outside.

The high in the Evanston area Friday is expected to be 0 degrees with a low around -5 degrees. Windchill values could be as low as -33 with speeds between 10 and 20 mph.
