Burbank Man Named Fine Arts Director At St. Laurence High School

BURBANK, IL — St. Laurence High School in Burbank is expanding its fine arts programs by appointing new director of fine arts. Brian Herman, who will develop and expand the high school’s arts curriculum and extra-curricular offerings. The new role was created on the heels of increased interest from students in the arts over recent years.

Herman, of Burbank, is responsible for the resurrection of the school’s drama program, launching the “STL Players” in 2017. Since its inception, the group has attracted more students and grown year over year. Herman now directs two performances during the school year, one in winter and one in spring. The group annually participates in the Illinois High School Association’s Drama and Group Interpretation competition. Herman also leads St. Laurence’s drama and acting elective courses.

"I believe the fine arts are an integral part of educating the whole child,” Herman said in a news release. “I am excited to continue to develop and grow programs that inspire our students to display their creativity and sharpen their skills. It is an honor and a privilege to lead the fine arts department at St. Laurence High School."

Along with the growth of performing arts such as theater and band, visual arts elective opportunities have also expanded in recent years to meet the demand from students.

“I cannot speak enough about how much Mr. Herman has earned the title of director of fine arts,” said St. Laurence Principal Jim Muting. “Brian’s passion for the arts and student-first mentality have allowed him to be incredibly successful in taking the drama program to new heights. I cannot wait to see him do the same with the rest of our arts programs.”

Herman earned his master’s of education in administration and supervision from Loyola University Chicago in 2019. He also holds a master’s of education as reading specialist - from Olivet Nazarene University and a bachelors of science in education from Saint Xavier University.

Grade school students interested in theater can meet Herman at his drama summer camp from July 13-16 at St. Laurence High School. Drama camp allows students to explore dramatic and theatrical arts in a fun environment. The camp incorporates fundamentals of acting, improv, and teamwork through fun games and activities. The camp will be held in person, with appropriate social distancing and safety measures taken to ensure the health of each camper. Register online for drama camp and other St. Laurence summer camps.
