Where To Find Cooling Centers In Evergreen Park: Extreme Heat Advisory Issued

EVERGREEN, IL—Our relatively cool start to summer has turned into Hell’s Front Porch overnight as a massive heat dome builds over the Chicago region.

The National Weather Service has issued an EXTREME HEAT WARNING in effect through 10 p.m. Wednesday, July 1. Heat indices are expected to be over 100 degrees throughout the week.

The one-two punch of high heat and humidity could create a dangerous situation in which heat-related illnesses are possible.

Check on elderly and disabled family and friends and neighbors. Have plenty of water on hand for your pets and keep them inside or in a shaded shelter. Call 911 if you think someone needs a well-being check, and you can’t get there yourself, or if you see someone struggling on the street.

If your power goes out, your air conditioner breaks, you don’t have air, or you just want to give your electric bill a break, here are cooling centers where you can go to beat the heat around Oak Lawn and Hometown:

• Evergreen Park Community Center, Klein (Circle) Park,3450 W. 97 St.
• Evergreen Park Public Library, 9400 S. Troy Ave.

The magnitude of anticipated heat, combined with oppressive warmth at night, will lead to hazardous conditions, particularly for the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, and stay out of the sun.

The Cook County Department of Homeland Security also has a list of cooling centers for suburban Cook County and the City of Chicago, which may open on a 24/7 basis if needed.

Residents are advised to call ahead to make sure the cooling center is open. Government offices will be closed Friday, July 3 for the Fourth of July holiday.
