Hickory Hills Man Held In Michigan For Wife’s Murder: Cops

Hickory Hills man in Michigan awaiting extradition back to Illinois after his wife was found dead in basement following a fire, cops say.

HICKORY HILLS, IL -- A 71-year-old man who is the prime suspect in his wife's murder is being held in Michigan after he was pulled over in a traffic stop, Hickory Hills police said in a news release. Czeslaw Sipior is awaiting extradition back to Illinois on an arrest warrant for first-degree murder. His 64-year-old wife Maria Sipior was found stabbed to death in the basement of their home on Saturday.

Around 10 p.m. June 2, the Roberts Park Fire Department and Hickory Hills police responded to a 911 call of a house fire at 8907 W. 84th Ave. When the fire was extinguished, Maria Sipior was discovered in the basement deceased. Police said her husband and Maria’s silver Honda Civic were both missing.

Shortly after midnight on June 3, an officer in Watervliet, Mich., pulled Sipior over driving his wife’s Honda Civic for a traffic stop, Hickory Hills police said. Sipior reportedly had blood on his clothes and burns on his legs. He was detained and transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Mich., to treat his injuries.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Maria Sipior’s death a homicide from multiple sharp injuries. A warrant for Sipior’s arrest was issued June 5. Czeslaw Sipior is being held in Berrien County Michigan where he is currently awaiting extradition.
