South Sider Accused of DUI in Dan Ryan Expressway Crash Died Saturday

The accident happened at 3:30 a.m. Thursday near 87th Street.

Two days after causing an early-morning crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway, a South Side man accused of driving under the influence died of his injuries. Demetrius Pope, 40, of the 7200 block of South Whipple, died Saturday afternoon at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

At 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Pope was southbound on the Dan Ryan near 87th Street when he swerved and struck the passenger side of another vehicle, according to the State Police. Then he struck a concrete wall. The crash closed two lanes of the Dan Ryan for at least three hours Thursday. The other driver was not hurt.
