Village Board Recap: Jan. 3

The village board approves a new business regulation certificate, passes an ordinance on storage containers and gets more funds toward the senior center.

The Board of Trustees met Monday evening and discussed a variety of topics. Here's a summary of what happened.

A Note of Appreciation

Oak Lawn Fire Department Chief George Sheets sent a letter thanking the for assisting during the Eva's Bridal fire in November. Over 100 firefighters worked to help battle the blaze and although the shop was ruined, there were no injuries.

Condolences

The Village Board expressed its condolences to Trustee Mark Marzullo, who's father, Arnie Marzullo died on Dec. 30. Marzullo was not in attendance, but the board observed a moment of silence  in rememberance of his father, who was an Evergeen Park resident.

Holiday Initiatives Deemed a Success

Last month, the community food pantry gave out 147 Christmas dinners on Dec. 18, Santa visited 139 homes during the month and  the at Yukich Field was "very successful," said recreation director Dennis Duffy, as students were out on winter break. 

Holiday Hours

In observance of Martin Luther King,  Jr.'s birthday, will be closed on Monday Jan. 17, and will reopen on Tuesday. The regularly scheduled village board meeting will instead take place on Tuesday, Jan 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Special Finance Meeting

Village Treasurer John Sawyers and the finance committee will hold an open meeting on Monday Jan. 10 at 4 p.m. to discuss the village budget.

Approval of Resolution No. 5-2011

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pass resolution No. 5-2011, allowing bills to be paid out of the general corporate fund for sewer and water, capital improvement and self insurance, for a total of $494,425.11.

Approval of Business Regulation Certificate

The board approved a certificate for Advocate Christ Medical Center to open a business development office at 9401 S. Pulaski Rd.

Approval of Ordinance No. 7-2009 (revised)

Trustees approved an ordinance that "was meant to keep pods and large dumpters (from staying on ) the streets for unilimited amounts of time," said Mayor James Sexton. Residents will now have to pay a fee for the permission, instead of the previous deposit requirement.

Approval of Resolution No. 1-2011

A resolution was approved by the board that authorized the Mayor and the clerk to submit the subrecipient agreement and execute the 2010 Community Development Block Grant program year agreements for the 2010 CDBG Homan Avenue Senior Center. The Senior Center, located just down the street from , has been closed since Dec. 1, 2010, for necessary improvements, according to the village engineer Tim Klass. "Actually, this is a resolution that you agree to get $100,000," said Klass, adding that the next phase of improvements will be funded through the $100,000.

Renewal of Village of Evergreen Park's Insurance

Trustees approved a switch of the village's liability insurance and workman's compensation policies to Illinois Counties Risk Management from the Illinois Municipal League Risk Management, "saving the village about $100,000," said Sexton.

Bid Openings, Lettings and Disbursements

Trustees approved the sale of a $250 large box that was listed by the village. No other bids have been accepted.
