Heather Mack Says Boyfriend Killed Her Mom at Posh Resort in Argument Over Unborn Baby

The Oak Park teen testified for the first time in her Indonesian murder trial, saying her mom objected to Tommy Schaefer being black.

The woman on trial in Bali for the murder of her mother in a five-star resort hotel pointed the finger at her boyfriend, the father of her unborn child, saying he beat Sheila von Wiese-Mack to death with a metal bowl because the woman threatened their baby.

Recently of Oak Park, von Wiese-Mack was bludgeoned, folded in half and stuffed into a suitcase with bloody sheets. The suitcase was later found in a taxi at the posh St. Regis Hotel in August. Her daughter, Heather Mack, and the boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, briefly went on the run before Indonesian police tracked them down.

Mack and Schaefer, of Oak Park, face death by firing squad if convicted. Mack took the stand for the first time on Wednesday.

“The blow was not so hard ... and my mother was still resisting,” Mack said. “I asked Tommy to stop and then I ran into the bathroom.”

Mack said she and her boyfriend both tried to resuscitate her mother to no avail. They also discussed taking her mother’s body to the U.S. Consulate.

Before trial, prosecutors suggested Schaefer and von Wiese-Mack were arguing over the hotel bill.

Asked whether she wished her mother was dead, Mack replied “no.”

But earlier in her trial, prosecutors accused Mack of conspiring with Schaefer to find a hit man for $50,000 to dispose of her mother, reports news.com.au, presenting text messages as evidence that the duo discussed smothering von Wiese-Mack with a pillow or killing her on the beach and staging the death to resemble suicide.

Heather Mack has said her mother objected to her relationship with Schaefer because he’s black. Von Wiese-Mack’s late husband, the well-regarded composer James L. Mack, was African-American. He died in 2006.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported earlier that an Indonesian police captain said their argument was racial in nature: ”The victim called Tommy a (n-word). Tommy retorted, saying, ‘Your husband was a “(n-word)” too’. Sheila then said, ‘Yes, but a rich one’.”

Mack and her mother had a turbulent relationship throughout her teen-age years. Oak Park police were called to the family home more than 80 times. Police said the calls stopped after von Wiese-Mack and her daughter moved to a condo on the Gold Coast.

Just days before the murder, Heather Mack posted a photo of a beautiful scene in Bali with this cryptic message on her Instagram account: “i refuse to let someone say what i can do, gettin (sic) money my attitude you know what it do #bali.”
